327 timing again

I found this when I searched the forums:

"...most small block chevy`s like 12 degree`s before top dead center, with 38 degree`s total all in by 3000 RPM, if spark knock or detonation is detected, back off the timing 2 degree`s at the time until it stops and it`s set."

My "plate" with the timing marks on doesn´t cover 12 degrees btdc. It has a zero mark and an "A" mark some 8 degrees btdc. Is the 12 degree point out of visual range so to speak, 1/2 inch or so before the plate? That is where my engine likes to be set anyway.

Hmm, have to get a book on SB chevys, that wouldn´t hurt!

It is very possible that your timing marks don't go out far enough. The best cure for that is to get a timing light that has the adjustable knob on the back. This will allow you to set it for say 12 degrees and look on the balancer which in this case would say zero, are you with me? I bought one of these from Sears and it is a great tool.

You could probably eyeball it pretty close.

An alternative would be to use "Timing Tape". If you are not familiar with this, it is a tape that is marked off in degrees that attaches to the harmonic damper with self adhesive backing. It is cheaper than the set back timing light and can be used with any timing light.
