I have been looking for a 33-34 Ford roof insert & 2 of the major vendors supply an insert that is power hammered to the contour of the roof. Both vendors make their inserts from 18 gage steel. My roof is closer to 20 gage. I am worried that ghost lines will appear after the car is finished & painted black due to possible expansion rate differences between the 2 pieces. Am I overly concerned about this? Has anyone real world experience w/similar situations ?
I've filled roofs with purchased inserts, old doaner roofs of different years and models, and Ive english wheeled a few of my own. I dont think the metal thickness difference is going to be a problem at all. By the time its cut in, welded, ground down, and skim coated it should be perfect. If it is still a concern, just make sure the exterior is even with the body and let the excess on the insert hang inside? Does this make since? Good luck
This is good news. Glad to hear someone has done this in the past w/o horrible results. I'll weld it in w/the excess to the inside as you suggested & finish grinding both inside & outside prior to hammering/dolly/work.
Thanks,
Mike
