3300 pound car; want to do 12's in 1/4 mile

What kind of horse power would l need to do to get it in the 12's. I'm thinking 350 or so...Any opinions would be helpful, thanks

750+ carb

hi ignition

good single plane for 6500 rpm+

mechanical cam like 284/284 .530+" compression to match

deep pan increase capacity

manual body

4000 stall

4.30+ gearing 9+ x 28" slick

Go all out.

I never made it past 13.0 flat. If I wanted to crack into the 12's with a sbc , I d try that.

298 flywheel horsepower will put a 3300 lb car through the quarter at ~12.98.

Alright thanks. My friends are saying the same thing around there. Wanted to know if it were true.

Horse Power is great, but you can have all the horse power in the world and run 16's if you can't get the power to the pavement. You need to have the suspension set up properly so that you can transfer the weight to the rear wheels. If all the weight stays up front, it's not a total waste, there's always burnout competitions...LOL

That's true, l like that too lol

what kind of car? are you going to use slicks or drag radials? what engine? are you willing to use steeper than stock gears? 4 speed or auto?
Like already mentioned 400 ish HP engine can do it with the correct set up. you can do it with less hp if the engine is a torque monster.
toss in the car info and what type of driving you will do when not racing, and lets talk a few combinations

WDC I cannot see a 350 performer hauling the quarter at 12.98 in a mid size 3300lbs car.

If it can , I am doing something really wrong.

13 seconds for me , is like a big block with large hydraulic cam, single plane, big gears.

440

unless y0u are using the mopar purple cam, your car should run low 12s

spinn 04-08-2013 09:58 PM

The performer 350?

low 12's.. How about 15.0 flat.

The 440 is sacred to me. That is one impressive tank of a bastard. It was a little soft on compression back then, I couldn't afford heads. It was still dynamite. 13 seconds and I thought it was the fastest thing. The number does not sound so fast nowadays.

vinniekq2 04-08-2013 10:04 PM

spinn,Im saying your mopar should go low 12s,except if it has the dodge direct connection, purple camshaft.

WDCs example is a well set up car could sneak into the 12s with 350 hp. so many variables,I would rather tell someone their car will go 12.9s with a 12.20s engine,,,just in case there are other problems

spinn 04-08-2013 10:09 PM

Okay with my current engine dyno sheet . What would my current 440 , all rollered out , do in the quarter.

71 cuda convert 4 speed. Its a 3.23 in it now, but there is a 4.10 pumpkin somewhere. 26" tire. 4000lb? No idea.

The hp tq do match at 5250 or whatever, the graduation is weird.

vinniekq2 04-08-2013 10:19 PM

whats the dip in the torque curve? the lower hp usually means under cammed or not breathing enough on top. That car should be way into the 12s unless you are towing trailer

fordss 04-08-2013 10:30 PM

It's a 1985 pontiac grand prix; chevy stuffed. Planning to put 373s in the rear end; with either a th400 or th350. Most likely a 350 or bigger small block. Right now its a 305 with a cam 600 carb, headers, dual glass packs with a 700r trans. That's the vehicle it needs to run on pump gas.

vinniekq2 04-08-2013 10:38 PM

weigh your car tomorrow and come back to verify? I will see what ideas i can come up with,g2g4 now
