348/409 engine number castings

Although I took "searching the internet for dummies" at the local college I still am not too successful in finding much useable info. I am looking for a WEB SITE that lists engine number castings. I bought what was shown to me to be a 1962 409 truck engine .Block Id number is 3798967. It has the "X " mark on the driver side, front of block, plus a stamping -T02I9TF-on the passenger side front of block beneath the head. (Heads are gone to the shop for work so I don't know what their numbers are) I found, at WWW.morbec.com, a serial number 3798962 that shows to be a 1962-65, 348 truck motor. I am confused because of the "X" mark as I've always been told identified the 409/325hp truck motor. If someone can tell me a good website to check-out, I'll do the leg-work, I'm just confused as to what I'm spending all this money on. Also, I've always thought production stopped on 348/409s in 1964? Thanks in advance, Les White-Granbury Texas.

Are you sure that that number is the right block number? Because Ive been looking for it on a bunch of sites and all I could find was the 348 (3798962) and you typed this (3798967). Double check your numbers you may have one of them wrong

The "X" means it's heavy duty (ie truck) casting, the proper casting number is 3798967.

The T0219TF is the old ID number used before VIN codes; dissassembled it means:

- Prefix of "T" means Tonawanda engine plant is where it was built

- "0219" means it was built on February 19th.

- The suffix of TF means it was built somewhere from 1960 to 1964 (T) and it's a 348 (F).

A 348 block is easy to spot with it's "small" 4.125 bore; 409's and 427s being 4.312. The 409 and 427 blocks have a rod relief in the pan rail, 348s do not. 348s cannot be bored to the 409/427 bore.

Installation of 409s and 427s extended into the early 1965 production run, somewhat rare but they're out there.

Lastly, if the bores are way bigger than 4.125, keep in mind that the factory doesn't always follow the rules

Bogie

Urban legend has it that the 348 dipstick was on the left. The 409 was on the right. Dunno if it's true, but taht was the legend way back in high school.

348-409 block casting numbers.

Many thanks to all who helped me track the correct ID of my motor down. Seems like I have a "factory crate engine" type situation. While the block casting number translates to a 348, the engine bore is 4.165, intake casting # is for a 409, head casting numbers translate to small valve (220-250HP) 348 or 409 and left exhaust is a 409.Right exhaust is not listed.(3743806). The oil pan is a deep well, high capacity with passenger side dip stick (409).It dwarfs a standard 348 pan that I set it next too.
My belief is that my motor was sold as an over the counter sale or a warranty replacement or something to that effect.Since the serial number is for a heavy duty truck engine, If the customer ordered either a 348 or a 409 he received the same block with "accessories" tailored to match what was being paid for. Believe Bogie hit the nail on the head when he said "sometimes the factories don't follow the rules". I can't think of any other explaination.
Thanks again for all your help. I now just have to figure out correct parts to order, and until I do I think I'll call this old dog a 409.. PS.. It's going in a 39 chevy 2-door sedan,no front fenders or side wings on the hood. to show off the motor. I think it will be a very unique project. If I could figure out how to attach photos with my input I would be happy to send pictures as the build progresses. My only problem now is telling my two kids that Dad is spending their inheritance..Les White-Granbury Texas.
