I bought a 68 firebird when purchased I was told the engine was a 350 rocket but the engine code is 488986 which came back as a pontiac is that correct and is it a small block or big block

It shouldn't be a 350 rocket unless someones modified it. The 350 "rocket" would be an Oldsmobile engine and the only f-bodies that got Oldsmobile v8s were the late 70s Firebirds that got the 403 Olds instead of the 400 Poncho. I don't think any Pontiac motor follows the "convention" of big and small block. Technically an Oldsmobile doesn't either, they just have motors with a taller deck height, thus making them the "big blocks". FWIW i think there was a couple "short deck" ponchos like the 301. I'm sure one of our resident Pontiac experts will chime in.

Until a Pontiac enthusiast stumbles across this thread or a mod decides to change the title to something more specific, here's something to get you started:

Just as a suggestion, next time try to make your thread title more specific like "350 Pontiac" or something the like. The fact that it only says "350 ???" is probably making many people believe that this is a thread about a SBC 350, which is obviously the most common and popular engine of this displacement.
