look on the belhousing for 5.0 or 5.7, or you can run the casting number, or you can go on the side of the block (left from back) and look for the stamp, and there will be a "305" or "350" somewhere in the nubmers (they stand for date and place cast, CID etc).

re: 350 Or 305!?

what makes you think its either a 305 or 350...if its a small block Chevy there are lots of other displacements they could be

re: 350 Or 305!?

yep, hard to say, I found a 403 Olds in the ditch on I-44 in sunset hills once. I found a 351 Windsor in a creek behind a house I use to rent years ago. a buddy of mine found a 427 Ford medium riser behind a barn under feed bags while buying a brush hog from some ol farmer. he ended up takin both home.

Look on the pad where the on the right side front of block,it protrudes out from the head.Get those casting numbers and post them.
I do not know about a newer gen smallblock, but I have never seen 350 or 305 stamped on the side of a block, nor the displacement stamped on them in litres. Then again, there must a reason why they are out in the woods. Junk comes to mind.

its not a newer gen small block, ill check where you said, The engine im takin is complete and its not seized up so im assuming someone put it out there to use then just forgot about it

do 305's have the potential to become a race worthy motor i mean horsepower and torque wise

re: 350 Or 305!?

You can build a 305 up to get decent performance out of it. A Monte SS was not a slouch,it was not a screamer, but the 305 H.O was not bad. If it turns over,it is worth taking, given your age especially.Learn how it all works, first build, then if you do not like it sell it.Got some cash and expierence.

re: 350 Or 305!?

only the 86 & later blocks had 5.0 & 5.7 cast into them. if it is a Chevy, youll find the casting#s behind the drivers side head right where the block bolts to the tranny or bell housing. There should also be stamed #s like RC said on the block right in front of the passenger side head. If you dont find the #s in those locations...there not Chevy V8s
