What duty will the motor be asked to perform and on what grade of fuel? Personally, I would go with the 400 block and crank if the block hasn't been bored excessively already. I'll add more after I know the intended purpose. Please list part numbers for all the parts you now have on hand.

X3 also, I'll take a built 406 over any built 355 .....ANY day. If you've ever ridden in a 66 Nova (like I did once) with a very healthy 406.....well

I would go with the 400 block, but only if not already bored and tampered with. A good built 406 would easily yield 450 hp. But with time and money, a 406 or 421 could GIVE u 500 to 600 HP and just as much tq. I have a sbc 406 that makes 522 horses on a great budget... under $5500.. here is my build..

817 sbc 400 block bored .30
Eagle balanced rotating assembly (10.7) compression
Brodix Ik200 heads
LUNATI voodoo Retro roller 231/239
1.6 Harland Sharpe Roller rockers
Air gap intake
Quick fuel 750 vacuum secondary
Msd ignition
Hooker super comp 1 3/4 long tubes
Turbo 350- 10" 3000 stall
3.73 gears
In a 1985 Monte Carlo

This is actually a very nice engine build to copy, may slightly change the cam but its a pretty good build for off the shelf parts.
