350 or 400 sbc

I bought me a 87 S10 Blazer that had a 350 already in it but it had spun a maim bearing and lost oil pressure, anyway I was gonna get another 350 but now I have a chance to get a remaned 400sb. I was wanting to make this a daily driver and really don't need all that extra power, but it would be nice to have lol. I already have fast 83 silverado with a built 454 in it so I don't need another fast car. What HP and TQ numbers would a remaned 350 and 400 have? But I need help making up my mine. Tell me what yall think.

Not to sure about the number ( I think they vary alot between 350's) but I hear the old 400's over heat really easy. Just my .02 Good luck

Little engine that could

350 or 400

Get the 400. A mild camshaft on the order of 218* - 228* duration and about .450" - .480" lift will get you more torque than you'll know what to do with. Overheating problems in the 400 stem from lack of proper cooling or flow. Siamesed cylinders don't create heat. A good radiator, water pump etc., and not having the timing cranked waaay up, you should have no overheat problems. I have run several 400's that NEVER went beyond 180*. If you do the 400 use an electric fan, if you notice the heat cranking up at idle, turn it on. The 400's just make awesome power without having to do a whole lot to them. Even if you overcam the motor, it is forgiving. You should be able to toss a reman 400 with a decent intake and carb and be done. A cam as described works great. I know several others in my area who run the 400's and they are more than happy with their 'little engine that could'. A 400 is going to make more torque all other things being equal. Making a very streetable/driver friendly 400HP/TQ is very easy with the 400. The 350 is no slouch though. I'd take a 400 over a 350 any day!

A stock 400 is no "monster", they had low compression and the same cam and heads as an L48 350 4 bbl. smog motor. Get the compression up a tad and slip a mild torque cam in it with a 4 Bbl. and duals and it will really wake it up but it's still nothing to be afraid of just a good torquey grunt motor. The early ones do not overheat easily if your cooling system is in good condition. I had a '74 Monte Carlo with a 400 I beat the snot out of and never got it warm, I still have the short block and it is in excellent condition. Great motor for a light truck or 4 X 4.

i'd say get the 400. they do make nice torque. many years ago, when 400's and small chamber heads were both common in scrap yards it was a simple task to drill some steam holes and swap heads to make a pretty impressive street small block. add an intake, cam, and headers and these motors made real nice power.

if your not worried about fast go with the 350, the 400 will run hotter especially in an s10. other than that i think the 350 is as good as a 400

Im gonna go with the 350. I dont want it to be to strong like my Silverado. And I dont want heat issues with the motor. I know the 400 will make alot more heat. I going to use 2 ele. fans too. I havent found me a radiator yet. Anyone know of a good one that works pretty good?

76 model full size chevy truck radiator anything newer it will be too tall.
they claim a 1 row core 4.3 rad. will cool it but i never tryed it. i recently bought a jegs brand all aluminum 2 row 1 inch cores, smaller demensions than the full size truck rad. but same clearance from the fan and $100 more and close to 10lb. lighter

I got the old motor out today and turns out it was a crapy old 305. I found the block numbers on mortec and sure enough. I was very mislead when I bought it. But oh well, it does have a really nice paint job and nice wheels. Im going tomorrow to buy I new motor and tranny. Cant wait to get it in and see how it runs.

If you were planning on changing the radiator anyway i personally would have went with the 400.. Theres no replacement for displacement
Btw i have an 80 model toyota pickup with a 400 in it and i also ran a 350 in it and it still runs same temp now as it did with a 350 about 195 F

1/2 oz how did you put a 400 in a toyota pickup ?

are there motor mounts to drop it in ?

the 400 reman is one of the cheapest ways to get power. i helped get one in a van. 2 bolt mains held fine. performer manifold, q-jet. i think a th350 trans. guy spent about $1500. had really streetable power for a big vehicle. also replaced a 318 dodge van, performer, 4 barrel. sadly their was no comparison in acceleration. the 400 got it done fast.

with 2.76-3.23 gears a manual or 2000 stall in a car would be street cruising fun.

a toyota and a chevy have very similar chassis and drivelines toyota made a better differential then a chevy tho thats the only difference oh and the rear diff pinion yoke was ofset to the chevy by about 3 inches

I knew a kid in high school that put a 350 in a mid 80s Toyota pickup. He got the engine in but relocated the radiator to the bed.

I made my own mounts as for radiator i used a griffen from summit way cheaper than the conversion rad...bout half price or less and its not in the bed and i didn't cut the rad support at all

I havent bought it yet so the 400 is still an option. I didnt want another fast car but the 400 i only like 300 bucks more than the 350. ANd the only reason I an getting another radiator is the old one is really really thin and looks pretty old and alot of the fins was bent. The guy I got it from did a piss poor job of putting it on so Im replacing alot of stuff. Like for instants he had the top of the radiator held my 2 big zip ties. I just want to do and right and it last ALONG time.
