350 backfire thru tailpipe

Hi Guys
My grandson is currently driving his 70 Camero to Florida. He just called me and said his 350 engine is backfiring again. Let me back-up a little and tell you what happened about 2 months ago . His Camero started to backfire and he took it to a garage and they changed the distributor cap and wires and it seemed to fix the problem. All of a sudden its backfiring again. Any suggestions? Keep in mind its backing thru tailpipe. HELP!

Coil or modual going bad. Both are easy enough to change by the side of the road. But coil is very easy. Check the contacts in the cap for burning a little sand paper may put him back on the road for a few hours. Does it run ok when cold.

He said it only backfires after warming up on road driving about 60 mph

Is the module the same as a rotor.

If this is a GM HEI style distributor the module is under the rotor. 2 plugs and two nuts an its off. Just get one in a parts store for a 76 Camaro with 350 put it in the same way with little grease under it and all done. If its the coil its right on the cap cover comes off with 2 screws then 4 more under there holding the coil on.

350 backfires thru tailpipe

You arent going to find that grease just anywhere. THe parts store dosent have it,you are on the side of the highway, just wipe off what you can from the old one with your finger and smear it on the new module or use the grease in the box of the new module ,which isnt really the right kind.It will get you where you want to go.

I had a car with HEI it would run fine till it got hot then start crapping out turned ou to be a bad moduale and ran fine after it was replaced. after a while it would stop running until it cooled off then I could start the car again and drive til it got hot again. Looks like it happens all the time. If you have had the car for a while and have not changed it its time. i change them out with the wires and cap now since they are so cheap. Orginal gm units are actually the worst since everyone has made an updated part now best to go aftermarket. I think a/c delco has a new part number as well. but not sure if theyh support higher rpm and stronger spark like the aftermarket ones do.

Coil and wires can also be good suspects. Along with chalking on the distributer cap contact parts.
