Got 85 chevy 350 new engine bored 40 over new everything. 4000 miles,this engine started having a pinging sound. sounded like a valve ping. after trying all the obvious found the dipstick bent and a inch missing from it. What happened here any ideas on what hit it?

Is the lower dipstick tube in place?? The one in the block down past the main cap.

It guides the stick past the main cap and keeps the crank from hitting it, guiding the stick down into the pan instead of letting it curl.

I thought I bent rod or worser. that might be fixable without pulling the or motor. Going to check it out need to get oil pan cleaned out any way. Thanks for advise.

An inch missing off the dipstick could be because whoever built the engine bought too long of a dipstick and just cut it so it would fit instead of buying a shorter stick. But the doesn't explain the pinging noise. Just a thought.

It was the right one. It ground the end off. It would only make the raked every once and while. until one afternoon when i got home hit the fuel a few times, then noise got loud and didn't stop. shut it off and started back up noise stopped. got out to inspect damage, tried to pull dipstick out it was stuck. finally got it out it. the part that was left is bent in 90 degree angle.
