Find a local machine shop and start saving your money.
You will need the correct pistons and rings.
While he has it in his shop give him your heads as well and get a good port job done.

All comes down to the almighty dollar. How much do you have to spend just on the engine?

I just got my long block back from the machine shop, total bill was $1025.76. I had the block checked, cleaned, it needed to be decked. Had to have it bored .040 over, new KB hypers and moly rings. Crank was polished, knife edged and lightened. New main and rod bearings. Rods were shot peened and casting marks removed, rotating assembly was all balanced. Also got all new gaskets in the deal. Finally, I had them assemble everything, in the process of moving so I didnt have time to assemble myself and its great to know that I have a warranty for the $100 they charged to assemble.

On your budget of 2k, you could have the same work done to the short block. Pick up a set of Vortec heads and intake and have a great runner. Good luck with the build
