350 crate motor backfire, not starting

New chevy crate motor, edelbrock manifold and carb with new MSD 8362, electric fuel pump (regulated). Backfires thru carb and will not start. Initial timing is 8 degrees BTDC (confirmed by turning engine over with fuel off and using timing light), vacuum plugged, verified that timing is set on #1 and not #6, checked timing mark on harmonic with piston stop, plug wires are on correctly.

Out of ideas and need your help.

Thanks

John

Have you tried advancing the timing while trying to start it, just give the dist a small turn each after each try, if this does nothing go back and retard small amounts, I know you think you have it timed but give it a try.

Also did you set or check the valves/lifter preload for correct adjustment?

Check for a defect in the module. Also carbon tracking in the housing. A hope you make sure 5 & 7 is not reversed. The plug wires can cross fire.

Sometimes the marks on the balancers are incorrect. The outer ring on the balancers can spin as well.....Poor quality control in the old sweat shop I suppose

If its not working out with the light, do the old finger in the sparkplug hole trick. Have a friend bump it over till it blows your finger out of the hole. Then ensure that piston is TDC with a probe. At that point you can check your balancer/timing point for accuracy. Remove your dizzy cap. Find the location of the rotor pickup. Start your order from there.

if its backfiring its firing my suggestion would be to make sure u are on the upstoke on tdc and not the downstroke some builders of engines mess up in the timing chain when they line them up thats all it could be id double check that with the cover off then ull know its right
