Cool 350 GM Goodwrench Caprice engine in 3rd Gen TBI F-Body?

I'm looking at getting a cheaper older T/A and buying a NEW GM goodwrench 5.7L / 350 and dropping it into one, and the early 90's Caprice 350 is CHEAP (1400 dollars or so - turn-key?). I can always modify the engine later, I don't want to spend 4000 bucks on an engine, or get a remanned engine of dubious durability.

The Caprice Goodwrench is supposed to be easily adapted to an early 90s TBI Trans Am or Camaro, but I read that some late 80's F-bodies were also "TBI".

Does the car need to be "TBI" and what does it take to make, say, a 1979 Firebird "TBI"? A lot of time and expense?

Does anyone know the dates that a new GM Goodwrench 350 made for the Caprice Classic would be swappable into a TBI Trans Am? Example - from 1987 to 1992?

Oh, also if anyone has any good Auto Tranny suggestions for this engine, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks,
- Mason

Question re: 350 GM Goodwrench Caprice engine in 3rd Gen TBI F-Body?

I just want to make sure what it is you are asking. Are you referring to;
  • Throttle Body Injection...or;
  • Tuned Port Injection?

The F-Body also came through carbureted in the eighties.

Post re: 350 GM Goodwrench Caprice engine in 3rd Gen TBI F-Body?

late model f bodies that were equipped with the tbi or throttle body injection were the 305 motors.. rs models were the common cars and the z28's usually received the tpi tune port injection motors.. painless wiring company offers complete after market harnesses to install a late model motor/trans combo into a earlier model vehicle.. as far as crate motors go.. regardless of the year engine you buy to install you can go aftermarket to convert to fuel injection but it will require buying a complete kit to convert.. tbi setups from chevy started in 87 and aftermarket parts are available to increase the potential from them...
