350 head gaskets

I have a 1986 350 with blow head gaskets what's the best way to go at this I think what happen was it was idling to high and to long so they blow when I put the motor in he truck it ran great but it always idled really high 2000 I had it idling for about a hour when they blow out . As to what to do should I have the heads checked for cracks and should I get new head bolts?

your idle problems may be caused by the timing being off, or carb not adjusted correctly, it wouldnt hurt to get the heads checked, esp if the motor has ran hot at any point, changing the bolts are up to you i have reused head bolts but i think the book will tell you to change bolts,

If the idle wouldn't come down it's sure sign something was amiss. Usually if the high idle time resulted in it running hot and blowing the gaskets it points to a rather large vacuum leak which would cause it to run lean and thus cause the heat. Both heads will need to be magnafluxed and it would likely be a good idea to have the decks of the heads checked as well as the block. However if the engine was run too hot chances are the rings are history as well and a rebuild will be in order.
