Post 350 heads or 305 H.O. heads?????

I am rebuilding the 350 motor out of my 1986 Suburban 2wd 1/2 ton. I will be using the Edelbrock 2102 cam, 1406 carb, and 2101 performer intake. Can't afford the Performer heads, but I have a choice of rebuilding the stock heads or using a set of 305 H.O. heads that I currently have. The suburban will be used as a daily driver and occasionally towing a trailer. Which set of heads would be the best suited?

I have never delt with 305s very much, but I have heard that the heads have good low end torch. Sorry I can't help a whole lot.

Do not, I repeat do not put 305 heads on a 350. They will ping like crazy. Trust me been there done it. <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

I think a great set up for a low buck truck engine would be to use your stock smog heads with flat top pistons. This should give you a honest to goodness 8.5 or so compression. However, one of the problems with cheap pistons is that they often set the piston at about 45 thousands down the cylinder. Ok, here's my recipe for and cheap but perfect truck motor that will only cost you pennys more than a bargin basement rebuild. Flat top pistons. Deck the block for about 10 thousands deck height with your pistons. Don't hone with a torque plate unless it's for just a few bucks more. Stock aluminum 4 barrel intake that you get from the junk yard for 15 bucks. Home port your 76cc stock smog heads with a gentle approach that is aimed at cleaning up the cylinder chambers and smoothing out the throats. Then get a cheap valve job done to them but do spend just a couple of extra bucks for at least bronze liners so that it won't smoke on start up a few thousand miles down the road. A 204/214 cam will more than do the trick. Use your stock exhaust manifolds but hook them to a cheap high flow cat and a decent performance muffler like a Hooker Aero Max or a Flow Master 3 chamber. Rear end gears should be a least 3.08s or more perferably 3.23s to get your bus going. I think this would make for a very enjoyable ride that would have a surprising amount of get up and go for very little dough! And get half way decent milage to boot!
