350 Ignition

I recently became the proud owner of a 72 Chevy 3/4 ton pickup with a 350 and automatic. It has the original distributer and I want to change to a electronic version. I will also want to put on an aluminum intake and headers. I notice that a lot of the dist. don't come with vacuum advance. I assume these are for newer engines. The question is: Does anyone have any recommendations at to distributor, intake and headers? I am not trying to build a lot of horsepower just want something more efficient and reliable.

I have seen a lot on how good the Edelbrock intakes are. Would this be the way to go? I also want to add a MSD pack. Does this work with all dist.? Is this really worth putting on or is just the new dist. enough. I understand the MSD has multiple spark control so it should get a better burn.

If you are going to put a multispark box on. I recommend the MSD. I have tried the Crane box and was getting backfires through the carb. I contacted Crane and they said there were compatability issues between their box and the MSD dist. I put in an MSD box and had no problem.

Mallory builds a distributor which is half the price of the MSD but again you are mixing parts. Stick with one brand.

MSD builds 2 dist that would suit you. The 8360 ready to run with firewall mounted coil or the 8365 MSD HEI.

They build several multi spark boxes. The cheapest (not having rev limiters) is the 6A. Which is suitable for a truck.

The Edelbrock Performer intake is designed for truck application. Making power and torque from 0 to 5500 rpm.

If you plan on running the truck into higher rpm ranges. I suggest the MSD 6AL multi spark box and the Edelbrock performer/rpm intake.
