Look @ the block just behind & below the drivers side head. You will see either a 5.7L or 5.0L along with some other #'s.You may need a mirror & some lite.

Either way you go,you will need gears & headers,so,I would start there. That will lay the groundwork for everything else. You can get an RPM intake,750 Q'jet,& a Lunati VooDoo cam kit for that $1000.Assuming your current motor is healthy, this combo would get that El Camino moving out pretty strong.Especially if your motor is the HO version w/ the flat tops & higher CR.

The majority of the Pontiac V8's you will come across for sale will not be a high performacne version. They will be the base low perf engines, low cr smoggers.
The high perf versions will never get offered for sale cheap unless they are fubared.
So don't expect it.
Think about it. New low mile 400+HP a LS3 out of a wrecked Camaro will be cheaper than a Vintage 400 RAM AIR III RAM AIR IV poncho motor to buy.
Nobody is going to sell these rare motors cheap unless fubared. The last good 400 was 1972. And very rare.

The base 3.6L V6 and transmission from a 2013 Camaro is 323 net horsepower.
It is a very high performance engine. Grab the whole package engine trans exhaust, computer, fuel system
from a wreck and transplant. Power will increase even further with custom headers and a cam on this high output
engine. Good gas mileage too. This thing is a screamer 323Net HP @6800rpm
You would want o grab all the supporting systems, fuel , cooling exhaust etc and use as much of it as possible
in the Camino. It is a whole complete drivetrain system Keep it whole.
The Camino will be a whole new car. and GLH. pobabily can be bought for cheap as all the V8's will be picked over. 323 net HP is very close to 400gross dyno HP and a lot more than a stock 305 makes.
6 speed trans too.

Without boost or nitrous, you can build the 305 to 275,maybe 300 HP & still have a dependable & fun daily street driver. After that, you are gonna start having drivability issues. That mite slay some of the average run of the mill 'stangs, but, not the 1's that have had any effort put into em,or.the later models w/ EFI,etc. You can take a new crate 350,or,a decently rebuilt 350,add headers w/ good exhaust,750 carb,or,EFI setup & have your 300 HP rite there. There are lots of options including the V6 F-bird mentioned. It just depends on what you want & how much time, effort,& $$$ you are willing to put out to have it.THE FASTER YOU WANNA GO,THE MORE IT COST !!! Lol.

The earlier SN95 stangs were slow and heavy....they did get better in the later years, but your going to need a lot more then gears if its a 305 el Camino, the Honda's are an even bigger pain, its a complete crap shoot with them, could be a d15 with a fart can, or it could be a stripped hatch with a B18....one goes 17's, the other 13's....add boost and your screwed lol.

after the gears i might port the heads or something but i dont think i want to put alot of money into this motor by the sound of it, it seems to be cheaper to get good hp out of a 350 anyway and if i spend the money i would on the 305 to get the same out of a 350 then why not spend it on a 350 and make more power

Most parts you buy for the 305 will transfer over to the 350,except for maybe the intake if you end up goin to an L31,or even just Vortec heads.Think of your 305 as a "parts saving account" for the 350.LOL.IIRC,you already have a 4 bbl.The gears & a set of headers should make a pretty good increase.
