Depends on the carrier.....2 or 3 series....
Have you determined what gear is in it currently?
Open the glove box, look at the RPO sticker and find a "G" code and this will tell you
The stock gear.

well the sticker is not there is there a way to do it with the VIN

Its an open diff correct? Are you just looking to do a gear swap or are you going with a posi carrier?

ya i just want to put 3.73s in it but i think it already has posi traction but i heard if it has like 3.42s i can if it has 2.73s i cant

You can still use a 373 but it would have to be for a 2 series carrier.....it would surprise me a lot if its a posi in there now.

I know you can do a ring & pinion swap from a 3:08 to a 3:73.Not sure about 2:73's.I doubt you have 2:73's in an El Camino tho.It's possible tho I guess.You can jack the rear up & count the # of driveshaft rotations for 1 complete turn of the rear wheel to see what you have now.

ok so i might have another option for my el camino i was talking to my grandpa and he had a 327 that has a larger cam and it is in one of my cousins house so that might be an option and it should be basically free

why 4.10s is there a difference in the motor that allows me to do that?

Really depends on how cammed up it is.Do you have any specs,or,info on the 327? The 327 will have a shorter 3.25" stroke vs the 3.48" stroke of your 305.It will benefit from more gear to help it rev.It will have a 4" bore & should be a good upgrade over your 305 if it's in good shape.

To evaluate the performance potential of that 327 ID the cylinder head casting number.
Under the valve cover.

well i figured out that it is a fully rebuilt with all the basic hot rod stuff done to it that hasnt been in a car since it was rebuilt

should thouroughly recheck engine before installing.Might need valve springs,if its a flat tappet cam,might need to be relubed,,,
how long did it sit? what exactly is inside?
Might be worth a gasket set to check it all out? what is the compression ratio? are the heads ok for unleaded gas?

well im not sure what all is inside the engine but it was professionally tuned and everything but ill have to talk to the old man and see what is done to it but see now i dont know what will happen cause my cousin has a lot of money in it so he might not just give it to me but at least i know it isnt going anywhere
