I once had a short piece of hose from the sending unit to the steel line on the frame sucking air. It was hard to find because the hose stayed dry. One of the craziest things I've seen.

X2 if your talking about the hose from the fitting on top of the fuel tank to the steel line on the frame. I'm pretty sure you are, I just put it different terms just in case the OP didn't know where the sending unit was.

Sorry I missed were he said he replaced the sending unit. Duh.
You can check the hose and connecting lines by hooking up a vacuum pump to the fuel line on the inlet side of the fuel pump and seeing if it will pull fuel without bubbles of air. If you don't have a vacuum pump you might be able to borrow one from Autozone?
Has the filter been changed?

Fuel line rotted, pinched or plugged somewhere. Disconnect it at the pump and use a compressor to blow air through it . You should be able to hear the air in the tank. A hole in the line somewhere will keep it from sucking fuel from the tank, old rubber line will suck air. If it is plugged most likely the air pressure will free whatever is stuck in the line.
Also check to be sure the vent isnt plugged, they is with the gas cap off

I've had new mechanical pump installs where the fuel has drained from the line. Took several priming with the short run time to get it to keep running. Have you filled the carb float bowls (through the vent tube) and run them out to give more pump "prime time"?

X2 on checking the fuel-pump rod.
Have you verified fuel from the pump to the carb ? un-hook at the carb and see if you have coming up through the line to the carb JMO. But if it won't run by priming it hummmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
