Thanks ap72. Like you, my engine builder also strongly recommended flat top pistons. He has some used that he can throw my way.
I think the $2000 build is realistic, because of the bargains I have been able to find. I think I will exceed it by a few hundred, but I will be close. Here is my receipt total so far of what I have in hand:
$200 - 350 block: good compression, running motor.
$ 80 - Edelbrock 750 carb: ~500 miles on it (PO went Demon)
Free - Low profile chrome air cleaner assy: Came with carb
$500 - E-Tec 200 Vortec heads, assembled
Free - High performance dual valve springs: Came with heads
Free - 1.6 Rocker Rollers: Came with heads
$200 - Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Vortec intake: like new, too good to pass up.
$ 50 - Flat top pistons - used, good condition.
$100 - Hooker Block Hugger 1.75" headers
That puts me at $1130 without a cam. Another $600 goes to my engine builder for assembly, rings, pushrods, seals, gaskets, machine work, studs and hardware, etc. So I have only $270 for my cam and lifters. Someone suggested an ISKY...
