If you buy used HEI get one built in the seventies. Vac advance unit. Before computer controlled spark. Check for shaft/gear wear. Replace internals.. New aftermkt stuff can be had cheaper.

It would depend on how much money you had to spend for a distributor. To decide which way to go after-market or stock. JMO

Do a quick search, I bought a unit from Skip White on Ebay and made a thread about it. It's actually very nice, and after a comparison, it's actually the exact same unit as MSD's Street Fire distributor and the Jegs/Summit brand distributors.

I found a new MSD Ready to Run on ebay for about half price. It works great. I see that MSD is making a module to fit in the old points type that works similar to the Pertronix. You just attached it to the points plate and go. Easier than the Pertronix and the distributor would be very cheap. I run a Pertronix on my Corvair and Catalina and they work great.

^^^ I would second Jr. the 6500-R from skip is a good bet for about 50 bucks, also get a crane 99619-1 limiter plate to limit the vacuum advance, another 5 bucks but skip does not sell them, try summit.

Make sure you check for firewall clearance the skip HEI is a full size unit and some cars won't accommodate that size.

Sounds like a good enough price.
