350 Starter Problems

Today i hop in my truck to go on a date and i find that i have no power in my cab, no ignition, nothing.

upon further inspection i find my ignition wires off of the starter selenoid are just rotten. after rewiring the ignition wires, buying a new selenoid and installing everything, i go to start it and it sounds like the starter is grinding on the flywheel. it wants to start but i doubt the starter is engaging properly.
it didnt have any shims when i removed it. how can i sit the starter so it is proper. there seems to be very little clearance between that little ring on the starter and the flywheel.

Here`s what I do. First make sure your using the correct bolts, they should be knurled and have a shoulder on them. There should be no washers on the bolts. There are grooves in the starter than the bolts shoulders fall into, make sure these grooves are clean so the bolt shoulder fits in squarely. Reinstall the starter, and torque the bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
Next go over your grounds. I would run the ground from the battery to the block and another ground from the block to the frame. I`ve used this method on many cars and so far, it`s worked every time. Improving the grounds helps the electrical system greatly, not only are the lights brighter but the electrical system don`t have to work as hard so it lasts longer. Also check the factory grounds coming off the firewall, make sure they are present and connected.

Kind of cold to be messing around under a car right now, isn't it? That's got to be part of the frustration. :(

the starter motor is fried, probably fried when the wires shorted out.

and yes it is cold, but i did a tranny swap in minus 30 a week ago so whatever.

I'll bet it's canadian slang for fried, cooked, done, blown, od'd, and FUBAR ! :D
