whats idle rpm at before putting the trans in gear? are you running points or HEI for distributor? does the truck have power brakes? (maybe booster diaphram is bad?)

There may be a stuck valve in the valve body that controls the line pressure in the transmission. The transmission is operating at full line pressure instead of regulating the line pressure. (Low at idle and low throttle input, part throttle driving,, high at high rpm and WOT)

This is part of what controls the shift firmness.

Often its a small piece of dirt or grit that jams the valves in the valve body.

Not so uncommon on a new build.

A trans tech can fix it in about 20-40 minutes. Removing the trans is usually not nessessary.

Drop pan and valve body. Dissassemble and clean valve body, reassemble.

Once its fixed it likely won;t happen again. Just one of those things.

unless its a lockup type 350, this is very unlikely to be the problem. real hi line pressure will not cause an engine to stall unless the engine already has a problem with a load on it.
