350 Turbo tranny Questions

Hey all, I'm new to rebuilding world and i have recently taken on my first project of rebuilding a 4x4 85 chevy half ton. it has the 305 engine with 700r4 tranny with 3.08 gears right now, i was planning on putting in a 355 engine with 350 turbo tranny and keeping the gears. is this a good setup for power and mileage? id like to keep it a daily driver with some ponies. ALSO, im looking at a used 350 turbo tranny for $400, will a 1200 rpm stall conveter work? it has a b&m shift kit as well. im not sure on tranny specs and do's and donts. any help is greatly appreciated!

I had an '83 Silverado 4X4 1/2ton, 355/Turbo350, NP208, and 3.08's. It was lifted 4in. and had 33's. The gear/tire match was bad, and I ended up averaging 10mpg. Don't expect much in the mileage-department...that truck is square and pushes a lot of wind...and it's not exactly a lightweight either. Good luck on your venture.

If you are looking for mileage an overdrive transmission will be better the the TH350. If the 700r4 is healthy you may want to stick with it
