351 coleveland c4

i have a 351 cleveland and am rebuilding it possibly and hopefully around 400 hp i have a c4 and a guy who builds race trannys saying that he can build me a c4 that will withstand the power he can build it for me for about 650 bucks. i am wondering if this is a good price and if this trans will actually hold the power. he says ill have no problems with it. he says the c4 wont rob as much power as a c6 and its smaller just want some outside advice too see if this sounds reasonable. thanks alot

I like C6 better, but...

I like C6 better ... they're just beefier to start with.
I have read previous posts that do confirm that a well-built C4 will be OK, too.

$650 sounds fairly reasonable for a "race-prepared" transmission, at least in this area. Does that include a convertor (or at least a convertor flush)??? If not ... I'd recommend it.

Bottom Line:
I suppose that as long as the guy WARRANTIES the C4, I'd be willing to give it a try. Otherwise, I'd throw that cash into a C6.

Rule of thumb here;

The C4 can be modified to withstand about anything, is lighter and takes less power to turn. But on the other hand, a race-prepped C4 may not be able to withstand the rigors of everyday street driving. The C6 would be better suited for the street with the power potential of a modified 351C.

If you do use the C4, just make sure it has enough cooling and fluid capacity, especially with a high stall convertor.
