351 windsor in a 49 ford

My buddy currently has a flathead 8 in his 49 ford. He wants to replace it with a 351 windsor. After pulling the flathead, it's looks like the 351 will hit the steering box. Will we have to replace the steering box, and if so, any suggestions? The front crossmember is staying stock except for a two inch spindle drop and disc brake conversion. Also, any advice on using a C4 or C6 tranny?

351 in a 49

I cant address the steering box issue, but I would go with a good C-4, with a shift kit in it. The C-4 is plenty stout and a shift kit will cure all the minor ails.
Other advantages to the C-4, are lighter weight, and less perisitic hp loss through the tranmission.

I'll add in that the C-4 is alot smaller and shorter then the C-6. For what your doing the C-4 should be enough, especially if your talking about a stock 351w.

The C-6 is a nice choice also. The clutches are bigger, and the internal parts are stronger. Yes it takes more power but if your not bracket racing and just a street car then thats ok. Very heavy duty and even in its stock form will outlast a built C-4. They are larger, heavier, and longer, but personally I feel they have 1/2 the problems that you might see with a C-4.

Either way, I would buy a junk C-6 and make it fit. The reason is lets say you build the car now for the C-4, then later you want to change to a C-6, it may not fit because of clearance problems. If your in the building process now, I suggest fitting a C-6 to start with, make your clearances around the bell housing, floor pans, once this is done, any other transmission will fit.
