351C - overdrive transmission

Does anyone know if there is a transmission out there that can be installed on a 351 Cleveland that has a 4 or 5 speed with overdrive? Even an automatic with overdrive would be acceptable. I have a '72 Mustang that I frequently take on the highway and am running 3500 - 4000 RPM's and burning a lot of fuel. I am looking for overdrive to drop the high speed RPM's.

assuming you have a c6 behind that 351C at the moment, you should just get an overdrive tailhousing from gearvendors

http://www.gearvendors.com/

it will give you 6 speeds, in an auto

351c overdrive trans

on some of the Ford sites i visit, an AOD from 88 to 93 stangs or pickups seems to be a good set up. if you want a bullet proof AOD,there are a couple aftermarket trans companies offering beefed up AOD`s (big money!). good luck with your "c".

I saw an AOD in the boneyard shackled to a 302. If it works on a 302, it will work on a 351-C. So yes, I agree that an older AOD will probably work, at least bolt up anyway. You shoul also be able to use the old driveshaft, too if you have an FMX or C-4. If you're rodding, I'd recommend a souped up C-4 over an AOD. C-6 is a great trans, but it will rob a kindly chunk of horsepower. C-4's are rumored to rob about 25% less horsepower than a C-6. If you're burning too much gas, you can get some shorter gears which might help. There's a world of difference between 3.8's compared to 2.7's.

The 302 is a small blocK bolt patern. It was my understanding that a 351 C is a Big Block bolt patern. If that is the case, you need to watch the bell housing paterns you look at.

351 C TRANS

351C is a small block with small block bolt pattern.

the input shaft on the aod seems to be the weakest part & breaks when used behind hi-po motors. have fun with your stang!!!!!!!!!

Ditto with FastFord - 351-C is a small block bellhousing. They actually came with FMX's on some of those 'Stangs. Don't tell anyone, but even though 351-M/400 have big block bellhousings, they are still considered "small block" engines. SSSHHHHH!

(HEY FASTFORD...YOU GOT A 351-C, too!!! Very nice)

You can also get a late model 5 speed and bell housing from a 5.0 car. I'd look for the world class one. If you're planning on drag racing it won't hold up long, so you would need a Tremec they bolt up to the early style bellhousing (they have the same pattern as the top loader). One last option is the 3+1 that came out in the late '70's and was used to the mid '80's. It's based on the old top loader with an aluminum case and an intregal shifter. They aren't as strong as a top loader but make a nice street trans, I've swapped several, they came behind the smallblocks and the 300-6, all use the same bellhousing so it would bolt right up tothe Cleveland. the 1 refers to overdrive 4th gear.
