351m/400 - where do i start?

hey, owning a 78 thudnerbird with a stock 351m/400 with about 106,000 miles and runs great with almost perfect compression. I am wanting to increase the power on it by quite a bit. I was wondering if anyone who has this engine has already added some mods to it and has had success with it to let me know what they did to it. Money is not a facter in this project so dont worry about that. Just let me know what parts you have upgraded and what the part numbers they were. Also is anyone who has any suggestions on what i should do to this engine let me know. Most likely i wont be selling this car or engine.

Also if any one knows what intake will fit with a 625 cfm Road Demon Jr. carb. And then also if that intake will bolt right on to my 351m/400 or if i will need some other parts too.

i did not know they put that motor in cars. i am not a ford geek tho. there has been alot of discussion on this motor if you do a search tho. i had one in a bronco. it did not respond well to a rv cam or a performer intake and holley. i expected alot more. many here think that engine is a pig but like i said, we really didnt know how to wake the sucker up apparently. i suggest you search 351M and read everything you can. i know that if you can find a better engine you will be happier, and i think either the winsor or the cleveland are better engines as they put both of those mills into a blender and came up with the Modified 351

I have a 1978 351M in my 53 ford sedan. It came out of a T-Bird also and it's a really good running motor. I put an Eldebrock Performer manifold with a 650 Vacuum secondary carb, used the stock exhaust manifolds (headers wouldn't clear steering box) with 2.5" pipes and turbo mufflers and a hotter coil. It runs good as the 53 is lighter than the old t-bird. All M's and 400's have the 2 barrel heads and they are all you need for the street, the problem with this motor is (as is with all smog motors) Compression. I intend to spend some time on this engine later when time is available, as for now it's a driver. My plans are 400 crank/rods, .030 overbore, 10.5 - 1 compression, crane rocker stud conversion w/ roller rockers, and a mid range hydraulic cam. The C-series motors have a lot of potential but the smog rules of the 70's killed them. The 2v heads are all you need for the street, the 4v's heads ports are too big to work well below 2500-3000 rpm's and that hurts you on the street.
