360 to 460 f100 swap

Has anyone out there changed from an FE engine to a 460 in a 67-72 F100? If so, how much problem did you have? Thanks in advance for any help.

You have different bellhousing bolt patterns from a 360 to a 460, so you'll need a new trans that matches the 460, and motor mounts are in a different place as well.
I believe that onebadmerc has detailed the swap you are talking about.

check it out..

You will need a transmission that will fit the Ford 460 bell housing pattern. Any C6 off a two wheel drive truck that fits a 351M-400, 429-460 will work with a 460 engine. Now here comes the tricky part, you cannot use the flex plate off a 351M-400 engine. These engines are externally balanced, the pre 1979 429-460 is a internally balanced engine. The 79 and later 460 engines are externally balanced, but I don't think it is the same balance as a 351M-400 engine. The 67-72 Ford trucks never had a 429-460 installed in them so no factory mounts for these years. They did put 429-460's engines in the 73 and later pickups. There will be a issue with using the later mounts on your 67-72 truck. In 73 Ford widened the frame so if you do find a set of factory 460 motor mounts, you will need to modify or shim them, or you engine won't fit on them. The 73-79 460 engine mounts are a three piece set up, the two lower towers, the rubber mount and the metal mount that is bolted to your block. There is another solution to doing this swap, LMC has a 429-460 engine conversion mount, they are kind of expensive, but consider this. Time it takes to find the factory 460 engine mounts, these are not easy parts to find. I hunted through a salvage yard that only does pickups, they had over 3000 Ford trucks from 1973-1979 and I found a complete set from three different trucks. These are very sought after items, salvage yards know this and they will charge you. Mine cost me $$$$ and I had to find them and pull them. Then consider the time it takes to remove them, the towers are not easy to remove, even with the engine out of the truck. By the time you have wrapped up in finding, pulling, buying and modify the stock mounts you might consider the conversion mounts. I am not trying to discourage you on a 460 swap, I think you should do it but things are different between FE's and 385 engines. After You get the mounts done and find a 351M-400, 429-460 transmission, 429-460 flex plate, torque converter, get the yoke while your at it. You will probably have to shorten or lengthen your drive shaft, especially if you have a FMX. The wiring will be in the same basic layout, and your radiator should be ok, but you will need 429-460 hoses. You might be able to tweak your exhaust to fit the 460 but most likely you will need to cut it and refit it. You front springs will be ok unless they are getting weak. Brakes will be ok, but if you have front drums, I would snag the whole front end off a 73-79 truck that has power disc brakes. You can even snag the 73-79 power steer box and hoses and add PS to you truck if you don't have it. If you have a FMX, MX transmission the shifter linkage and trans kick down will not work with a C6 transmission. The worst part of this swap is the engine mounts, the rest of the stuff is easy to find. I might have missed a thing or two, if I did, I am sure somebody will let you know.
