They do make small journal splayed cap 400 blocks to help with that flavor of soup. True, there's no replacement for displacement, but those big bore short stroke setups do like to spin. I know my old DZ 302 sure did,I wounder how one of those blocks would do with the 302 crank? You would need some darn good valve train to capture that rpm potential!

hey,

not to but in either, but just an off the subject idea, you might want to look into stroking it instead of destroking it. you can push so much hp out of a 400 sb. if you do destroke it, then take it to a 383 if possible. just some ideas

Well, like I say about displacement, but if rpms are your goal, swingin less weight around is a good way to go. Don't get me wrong,a well built 400 is hard to beat for a small block, look how much people spend on stroker cranks, and why wouldn't you want to take advantage of free cubes, especially if they are already there, unless your like me and like building weird stuff without reason, just to be different,Ive always been a little odd that way I guess.

Build a 377 and take advantage of a high revving small block. They are amazing... I raced one for a budy of mine in a s10 that was running a 8.79 dial in and even broke out a few times. Honestly, strokers are awesome motors for the street because of the torque they make at low rpm's but destroking is the key for rpms. If you would put a 383 vs a 377, I would garantee, if built the same obviously, that the 377 would eat the 383, horsepower wise. The 383 would win in torque, but would hit its max somewhere in the 5000 rpm range, and the 377 CAN go all the way to 12000 rpms.

Build the 377... way cooler than a 383... and more fun, but less street friendly.

right you are, if rpms are your goal, destroking is the key. also, i have a 383 stroker and the rpm range relyes on the type of cam you have, for instance my motor before i put my beefed up cam did redline at about 5000 to 5500rpm, but then i bought another cam and now it redlines in the 7000's.
