383 bearings

I nead some opinions on bearings. 383 stroker stock 400 crank turned down to fit in 350 block, 5.7 rods. solid roller cam 260 @ 50 600 lift 112 lobe sep. flat top kb pistons 10.9 compression. Ive got a brand new set of stock bearings i can use just name brand. Do i nead to run the high dollar bearings to make this motor last? Its a strip only motor. Thanks for info.

Some brands/types hold up better than others, but there is no reason stock type bearings can't be used as long as clearances are correct.

Doesn't sound like you are going to be making so much power that a hard H-type bearing would be mandatory, unless you ae shooting 2-300+ hp nitrous to it.

Many people buy race bearings and aren't even close to needing them, just because "somebody said" that is what they needed, or they believe all the advertising hype.

Thanks for the reply, i figure will be close to 500 horse no nitrous just a bracket motor. I have had great luck with the stock bearings for many years, and you guessed it somebody told me that it would beat the stock bearings out of it.

Grumpy Jenkins said in an interview a few years ago that he still keeps sets of original GM "Moraine 400 series" bearings in the back of his shop, for use when he has a "problem child" bearing in an engine, said they were the best he ever found. Won Pro Stock in 1973 or so using stock bearings in a 10,000 rpm 331.

You will find people all over who talk all kinds of mechanical nonsense just because they bought into the ad hype for something. Correct clearances and proper machine work mean a lot more.

I like King, Federal Mogul and ACL bearings myself, Clevite is overhyped IMO.

Depending on the crank, you might require the H bearings for the chamfer, if there is a large fillet radius on the sides, or you could scrape some material from the outside edges of standard bearings.

Ericnova72 - I've talked to Jenkins at several national events in recent years, he does come off grumpy, lol, but I have seen him smile a few times. Definitely a no nonsense guy,; he's probably forgotten more than many of us will ever know. I followed him in the '60's when his small blocks were taking down the big block MOPARS and Fords. Ahh, the good old days!

As others have said stock bearings are fine, pick your favorite brand.

I had a hard time believing it until a friend of mine who runs a late-model car on asphault had a 358ci chevy apart. He runs them multiple seasons (usually) as long as their within his accepted tolerances. He turns that engine up to 7,200 and only looses 800 rpm or less in the turns. Oil temps regularly 240- 260 degrees for 50 laps. He competes in up to 25 races a year depending on funding. If regular Clevites are good enough for him, they are way more than adequate for me.

That was my first thought also, then I read that he is using an OEM 400 crank, so the fillets would be small and not require wide fillet bearings.
