I know i'm asking a 100 questions, but i need to pick some minds that know, your help is appreciated ! ok so far i've ask about a 350 build , and a 377 build, but now wondering about a 383 build.

info on P/U it's going in
http://www.hotrodders.com/t63973.html&highlight=350+build

not a daily driver or hwy cruiser, 71 Chevy P/U 350 turbo tranny with stall converter & 373s rears

when building a 383 theres some block work that needs to be ground away or clearanced for the rotating assembly correct ? just have that done when block is machined / bored ? they should know where & how much ? i plan on reconditioning my 350 rods, then take the new crank in the northern auto parts kit, with flexplate and my ballancer down to machine shop and have it ballanced ?

this will have prob a roller rockers & an Edelbrock RPM Performer intake and 76cc cast iron heads, headers

ok questions

1. should i run a new harmonic balancer ? this place rebuilds used ones http://damperdoctor.com/

2. what CR should i run ?

3. should i run a HV Oil Pump ?

4. below is whats in the kit, what cam would you run for this build (cams for this kit are listed below)

if you get a new crank and the the right rods you don't have to grind.if you have the machine shop do the other work, have them do the balancing and grinding because one will run into the other and you'll end up destrouing the balance job.its not that much and much simpilar if you let them do it even for me.if you don't know what you're doing its a must.

what CR should a 383 run ?

you said new crank & the right rods, were you talking 350 piston with a 400 rod (5.565) and 400 crank ? (what RPM will this setup turn ?)

or is this a better way, 350 rod (5.7) , a 400 crank and a special piston for a 383. (what RPM Will This Turn ?) and a little grinding on the rod bolt heads or grinding a small base circle in the block for clearance ?

Thanks

I'd go with the 286 duration cam- you're stroke will give you the torque down low and with the increased displacement you're going to need the help up top. The 6200 rpm guideline for that cam will not hold true since you're stroking it. Also, what heads? I'd go Vortec- mostly cause its cheap and easy. Do some porting on the exhaust yourself, and if you know what you're doing, touch up the intake. Polish the combustion chambers and you could run a nice 9.5:1 on the cheap 87 octane- which is what I try to design my engines for. I've seen 10:1 work fairly well on a 383, but with a lager cam and in a more friednly car (Camaro's) In a truck I'd stick with 9.5.

That cam will probably put your peak power at about 5900 rpm- which I think is about perfect for a Saturday night stoplight racer with some gear.
