383 Cam Swap. Thoughts? More Streetable...

Hello Gang,

I'm wanting to tame my 383 down to make my V8 Beetle Bug more streetable. I know most guys want to go the other way, but I want to be able to drive mine on the street.

Here's the combo I thinking about. Keep in mind, this is on a budget, as usual. HP around 325 and torque around 350 would be just fine.

SBC 383
9.83:1 SCR
Vortec heads w/ upgraded valve springs
SUM-1785 Cam installed straight up (I like the idle of 106 LSA cams) Manual brakes, BTW.
RPM intake
750 carb
th350
2,400 stall
I'm open to gearing. I would think no more than 3:55 or 3:73
1 5/8 headers to 2.5" dual flows.


I want it to still perform well and be a hotrod, but not so much geared for track only. I enjoy driving around town and to car shows. It's a little ridiculous doing these things the way it's setup now.

That is a normal cam.

There's good news and bad news. The good news is that cam will work just fine with that slightly higher stall and gears. Mileage will be down a little from an "rv" type cam, but not too bad if its properly tuned.


The bad news is that even with those crappy mufflers you're still way past your power goal. If everything is tuned correctly you'll probably be around 330hp/345tq at the wheels (not flywheel).

Thanks! I'm okay with the power being more. I just want it to be more a little more drivable on the street than my current setup.

there is definitely a significant difference between those two cams. your new one will be much more streetable and give you plenty of power at streetable RPM.

probably around 18 initial and 34-36 total.

They'd work okay. Depending on your tires size 3.55's may be a little better but you probably don't have too tall of a tire in that bug.

No, they won't. With a 3.08 gear, you'd want to run a nearly stock cam.

I'm confused. If you want more driveability, why are you going with more cam? Sounds to me like you should install a bone-stock 305 with the 3.08 gears.

Please state exactly what you don't like about your present combo. I have followed your build from day one.

his current cam has almost 20 degrees more duration... I think you have it confused with a different build.

You may have also looked at a differest cam than the 218/218 one he spec'd as that one is a perfect match for the 3.08 gear and a th350. Cruise speed will be 2500-2800 rpm, and that cam will run out right over 5,000 rpm in that 383.
