383 chev crate motor wanted

Hi Guys,
I am looking for a reliable engine builder/supplier for a 383 chev stroker. I have talked on the phone with Jon Barrett engines, McClure Racing in Dallas, and Speedomotive about their package deals and I`m not feeling confident in what I am hearing yet.
Does anyone on the board have any first hand experiance, good or bad, that can be shared. basically I am looking for a fairly complete built 383 engine in the 450-475 horsepower category. Thanx, Bob myers, SD.

SpeedOmotive has a pretty good rep. Helped a friend put in a stroker from them, ran like a bandit. Had a small problem but they made it good.

Northwest Engine Exchange in Spokane Washington sells 383's in various forms. They warranty their engines up to 5 years. I have not bought from them as yet but had a long talk with their people at a trade show and they all seemed quite knowledgeable.
Good hunting
Steve

These folks have been featured in a couple of magazines....I haven't bought from them yet but plan to soon.

GM crate engine

Have you thought about a GM crate 383. They are probably more expensive but built with all new GM parts.

BrackneyC 09-18-2003 06:27 AM

I bought mine here. I have been pretty happy with it.

A GM crate motor is the best way to go. Not heard one thing bad from at least 6 rodders that have them. Good Warranty 12/12.
If you have a GM member it can be bought cheaper. Just check at a local GM Performance Dealer.
Cheaper to get one than build one.

DON"T

Whatever you do don't buy anything from Marks Performance Engine, out of Arizona, He's got only junk and half the time he doesn't even deliver. He's nothing but a snake

Guys,
Thanx for the quick response. There are two on this list that I did not know about. I will call them tomorrow.
I looking for a stronger engine than any of the small block GM engines. My goal is 470-475 horse power. I also want to customize the package a bit with a hyd roller cam and a pete jackson gear drive. There is no flexibility with Mr Goodwrench.
If there are any more sources any info, appreciated.
FYI, I talked with Richard McClure from McClure Racing out of Dallas and he can deliver exactly what I want, but was reluctant to provide me with references. I work really hard to earn $5000 for a new engine, so I am hesitant to go with him. He said "he would see what he could do to provide some names.
I paint motorcycles for a living almost exclusively via internet and out of state refferals. if some wants a reference from me I will give a bunch from different parts of the country without hesitation........was I asking too much? Thanx again, Bob Myers, SD

No, you weren't asking too much. Reputations are built on word-of-mouth AND referrals.

Go with the GM Performance Parts crate engine, hard to beat the price.

383

I've research American Speed engines and talked with their builders. They use all the quality goodies and know the correct details of assembly. I've purchased a mild 350 CID from Procell engines, (TX). They build 383's...nice pieces. The people at Procell were great to deal with. Whatever you do insist on a dyno sheet and review it with the tech in person or at least by phone. I think the GM crate 383 idea is a good one...great parts, good warranty.
Good Luck

not mcclure racing

i realize i am pretty new to this forum, but i only hopped on because i was looking for more info on richard mcclure, i ordered a motor from him 8 months again, and he hasn't produced nothing. it to was a 383 stroker, i am in the process of sueing him. he doesn't give refunds, he is the biggest nightmare and the biggest mistake i have ever done. mcclure racing is a joke. i am most likely goin to have to fly to texas and get my unbuilt motor then take him to court. seriously do not go with mcclure racing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

there is a guy on ebay a&rracing has 470 hp 383 with free shipping for under 4 k usd. i like the gm performance motors too but i always want more, and to get more i am going to need new heads. the a&r motors have good heads to start with. so i figure i am ahead of the game to start with.
