383 Engine Build

Parts list:

Scat40805BI Includes-(Forged Icon Pistons +19.6cc)
Forged Scat Crankshaft 3.75 Stroke
Forged Scat I beam rods

Block: Dart SHP 4.030 Bore, Zero Decked, Ready to assemble

Cam Kit: Comp K12-772-8 (Solid Roller) @.05 248/256 Lift: .576/.582

Parts Stack Height: 9.000

Compression Ratio: 9.5:1 with 64cc combustion chambers

Head Gasket Thickness: .039

I'm currently looking at bolting on a set of AFR 1054's to top this engine off. My plan for this motor is to use it for mud bogging. My dilemma is that I want to bolt on a set of heads that can really match this cam and make this motor push 550 horsepower to really spin all four of the 35 inch mud tires. Rear end is a 3.73 gear and plans to go to 4.56 are coming soon. Any advice to what set of heads, or cam change would be appreciated. I also want to be able to run no higher fuel than 93 octane but if alcohol is needed to raise HP and torque a reasonable enough amount to justify running it then I'm all for it. Thanks in advance.

I recommend cam 12-772-8 for your setup. The cam has an rpm range of 3000-7000 and will make peak power at 6800. The cam has duration @ .050 of 248 254 with valve lift of .576 .582. You will need a small base circle with the standard cam location. It will be no additional charge. How does this cam sound?

I think this cam is a little small to make big power though on a 383 it should rev 6800.
I would use AFR 210s or bigger to make 550 HP.The SCR will need to be tailored to fit the heads when you decide,probably 10.5 ish:1,depending on cam chosen.
the cam you mentioned has an ICL of 106.
you will need roller rockers with girdle or better. decent headers/manifold and fuel management system

Thanks for the info...but why do I need the cam in a small base circle? And I think I'm going to get a set of AFR 210 Eliminators and the AFR girdles.

That was actually a quote from Ryan Heart,he seems to recommend that cam to everyone,and Im not sure why?

I think the cam is good,not the only cam but a good one. The 383 might need a small base circle cam,depending on the rods you use.My 434 needed a small base circle cam.

also??? have you considered a 4/7 swap cam?If you plan to buzz the engine there are claims that the 4/7 swap is a little smoother

I have looked at the 4/7 swap but I haven't found enough to justify swapping over to it. If I were to want max horsepower and torque with this engine, would you change the cam to a different solid roller? I can get the AFR eliminator 210s shaved down to 58cc I would think and that would bump compression to around 10:1. But my question is, is 64cc chambers alright? And the Ryan Heart thing was pretty funny lol maybe this cam gets more lift and duration as it heats up to really build the power hahaha. Also with the stroker clearanced I beam Scat rods I bet I end up with a lot of cam/rod clearance. At least I hope so!

for 500 plus hp I would use at least AFR 210s and probably a bigger cam.A bigger cam will make this engine a little tough to tune and still have good street manners.
Tell us a little about the cars purpose?

My cam(example only) is 256/264 duration using a .420 lift lobe,so 640/672 lift minus lash. I have 3.50 gears and a 5 speed. It launches fairly smooth,but its not great in heavy traffic:
heavier clutch,
and the engine wants to rev out,so I shift into 2nd at 30-35 mph.
hard on gas and looking for long straight stretches(too much power)
think about how much power you really need and want

Exactly what you just described is what I want lol a motor that wants to rev out and likes straight stretches. I would like to maybe put this engine in a vega if I don't end up putting it in a jeep. I guess I can always change cams for car vs jeep.

The small base circle helps with rod clearance on the stroker engines, when the cam starts getting a lot of lift on the lobe this gets to be a problem even with cap screw rods and 12 point bolts. On the down side a small base circle cam is more prone to whip when using strong valve springs.

I knew that but I think with the stroker clearanced scat I beams I won't have trouble with cam to rod clearance. At least I hope I get enough clearance or I will be shippin a cam back! Lol

The Scat rods with either ARP bolt size works well.




It is important to consider the wt's of these rods for balancing.

Have you considered a smaller engine with less power?High RPMs are not a problem,,,
big horse power engines in an unknown car is a huge problem. A vega or Jeep? seriously? either of these cars will do poorly with stock suspension and 500 hp.

Keep in mind before you order lifters that the Dart SHP requires .100 taller lifters and that the lifter bores need honed.

I know all about suspension stuff with jeeps and Im betting I have over 500 HP right now in my jeep. It really hooks good bc my aftermarket leaf springs are pretty stiff and my tires have good tread on them. 500 HP in my jeep won't cause suspension problems I do believe.
