383 flexplate/balance plate/converter question

I have a 383 sbc. I am almost done putting it together. Im putting a non-balanced 350 flexplate on the back and was told to use a 400 balance plate. but when I put the converter on, the 400 balance plate blocks one of my converter holes........what do i have wrong? I know that there is only one way to put the 400 balance plate on and Im 99% sure I have it on right......I called the speed shop that I bought the balance plate from and he said "never heard of that happening" ??????? any assistance is greatly appreciated.

another thought.......

should I just go to a 400 balance plate and forget it? and if i go to the 400 balance plate, then does it have to be internal balance, or external (not sure on the difference)......

Smart move would be to use an 400 flexplate, which is external balance, so that you don't have to use the add-on balance plate.

The add-on plate is intended to be used with a internal balance flywheel for guys that are using a clutch and manual transmission where external balance flywheels are harder to find than external balance flexplates are. Not really intended for use with a automatic transmission flexplate, as you have found. The plate allows them to use an internal balance flywheel on an external balance engine.

The torque converter will work w/either type flexplate.

You are sure the engine is externally balanced, right?
