383 intake/cam questions

i got a 383 sbc (10:5-1 approx) with a comp cam magnum 292. .501 im wanting to run either a 3x2 intake (preferebly) or a 2x4 intake. the reason is primarily for looks my question is first is this a bad idea? i can live with some power loss for the looks. also does anyone have any ideas on a good 3x2 intake? thanks in advance

Hi!
You missed the trip set-up, but here is a dual quad factory piece. Then there's Edelbrock.

No, it's not necessarily a bad idea. I've built several 2-4 motors just for the looks. Like you, I didn't care whether or not it was the definitive intake system for power as long as it made me smile when I opened the hood.

The main problem w/a three deuce set-up, IMO, isn't the set-up per se- it's how it's set up.

If the ignition advance curve is dialed in right, the carbs are sized and tuned correctly, choked correctly and have a progressive linkage, there's no reason it can't be every bit as effective- if not more so- as a dual 4-bbl. and can rival even a single 4-bbl. set-up.

A while back, one of the Pontiac mags did a test where they built a BG carb-based tri-power and tested it against a 4-bbl. carb and intake. The trips did fine. For ~$1500 it should have done well!

In your particular case, that cam has the makings for a low vacuum signal to the carbs, so tuning will require the usual procedure to get a good idle to mid transition. But nothing that can't be done in a leisurely afternoon.
