5 deg BTDC initial is no mans land, oldchev you are going to digg the new found wealth of performance once you get the timing dialed in. Yes approx 18-20 deg BTDC initial would be a good starting point. If it likes 24-26 so be it but you may need a spark retard for hot starting, another reason to upgrade to electronic dist.
That miss at crusie could be related to A/F being too lean, make sure to keep that new mill on the rich side (or work the carb as mentioned) especially when you bump up the timing to where it should be as described, check the plugs and/or use A/F ratio analizer.
