Yes, you need a lot more timing at idle. (in the 30's using all mechanical or a combo with vacuum).

Total mechanical can be as high as 40 and as low as 34 depending on how modern the heads are. But limit total timing (vacuum plus mechanical) to 48-50.

Use a lower rated power valve. (4 to 5)

set idle rpm to 1000.

And make adjustment to air/fuel idle mixture after the timing is set and idle speed is set. (adjust for highest rpm).
