500HP AFR Headed Crate Engine
if I had the money to build one the way I wanted. I would build it in a 4 bolt main block, balance the rotating assembly with 6" rods. forged crank, forged slugs, H beams & all roller. AFR heads. I would shot for the 550 HP mark, 500 + pump gas friendly horse power would be bad *****. or buy the 500 HP crate engine.

GILBERT CHEVROLET has a �New� 383 c.i.d. crate engine, the ZZ383-500, to add to our line up. The new ZZ383-500 puts out an impressive 500 hp @ 5,700 rpm and 491 ft/lbs. @ 4,600 rpm of torque. GILBERT CHEVROLET starts with the GM 383 short-block as the foundation for the ZZ383-500 and adds to it all the tried and proven components that combine to produce this engine. Keeping with the goal of making this engine useable for street and strip applications, we chose parts that were well suited to this application, like the hydraulic roller cam which has great idle, vacuum, and streetability characteristics. We added the AFR 6155 Rev. Kit to help the hydraulic lifters function effectively at high rpm.
The top end of the engine consist of a pair of special AFR 195cc cylinder heads and an Edelbrock Victor Jr. single plane intake manifold to help the engine breath throughout the rpm range set as the goal for this engine. The AFR heads have 58cc combustion chambers, which helps the ZZ383-500 attain a 10:1 compression ration, and the ZZ4 plug pattern. The Edelbrock intake manifold is good up to 8000 rpm which is more then adequate for the maximum rpm of 6,500 for this engine.
To finish off the ZZ383-500, we added the new Holley 0-82751 4150 Street Hp 750 cfm carburetor to keep up with the demands of this engine and the Proform 141-693 Chevrolet Clear Anodized Aircraft Aluminum Plain 14� air cleaner for its low profile, to aid in hood clearance, and the overall show quality appearance it give this engine.
At this time we do not have a base engine package put together for this engine, but if enough people express interest in one, we will be more then happy to put one together for everyone.
As part of the celebration of the GM small-block V8 50th anniversary, we made a special version of the ZZ383-500 called the ZZ383-500A which features special black power coat valve covers and the black painted Proform low profile air cleaner. You can read more about this and see pictures of this version on our page made specially for this. This version of the ZZ383-500 will only be produced for the year 2005.
