383 stalls when put in gear

i just finished putting the motor back into my nova. i got it started and it runs good in park and neutral but as soon as i put it in gear it stalls. if i can get it to move before it stalls completly after it's moving it runs fine until i stop again. any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
engine specs: 383 stroker, 202 heads, isky 280 mega cam, performer rpm intake

what size gears are you using? do you have power brakes? I have a 1980 camaro with the same problem and it is just a vacumn problem. the overlap at idle with that large of a cam kills vacumn, ruining the chance of running accesories.

sounds like a timing and idle circuit problem. What are you current timing settings? What carb and how did you adjust it-or did you adjust it?

it has a th350 and 410 gears and it does have power brakes, i'm not sure what the timing settings are right now. it has a 600 holley on it right now but i'm rebuilding a 750. should i bump the timing up a couple of degrees once and see what that will do or try something else?

12-16 degrees initial timing should be fine. Are you using a stock torque converter?

it has a b&m holeshot 2400, it grabs a little when you put it in gear but if you hold the brakes it will stall up to around 2400.

get the other car built and adjust the primary throttle blades so they are open enough to just see a square at the transfer slot. Set the airfuel mixture screws at 1.5 turns out for starters. Bolt the carb on and start the car work the throttle if you have to to keep it running but don't change that idle adjustment screw setting. Get the engine up to operating temperature and put a timing light on it. Set the timing at 14btdc with no vacume connected to the distributor. Now adjust your fuel level in fuel bowls. Now adjust your airfuel mixture screws for the highest idle RPM then turn them in 1/8 turn. You can add more air at idle by adjusting the secondary blades open just a hair to help with the cam and reversion. Now adjust your accelerator pump linkage so there's no slack but it needs .015" of spring clearance at wide open throttle-make sure the spring isn't compressed fully at wot.

Once you get the idle circuit and initial timing sorted out then you can move on to figuring out what timing curve the engine likes and also play with the fuel enrichment circuits and main jet. The idle circuit and initial timing are first on the list though.
