383 stroker block and cam ????????
hey folks i've got some questions.I'm building my first stroker motor and i'm using a 88block. the block looks like it could be a roller block it has the hold down studs down the middle of thelifter valley and they are threaded.Right now the cam in it is a flat tappet cam.I read some where that most 88 truck motors came this way. thats all I know right now because the shop that its in is laying on top of it due to Katrina. What else do i need to look for? Isnt there something about the lifter bores be taller to support the roller lifters? They really don't look all that much taller.I've kinda gotten ahead of myself and bought abunch of roller stuff for the motor it's factory stuff out of a 5.7 vortec mercruiser boat motor the rollers, hold down, cam, thrust plate, and timing chain. Now wondering if the stuff will work. This motor is going in a 85 chevy 1/2 ton truck the truck is not a daily driver but I still have to be able to do truck stuff with it like pull a trailor and tractor with it ,this is not very often maybe 5 times a year. This leads to the cam question I want to run vortec heads on it if the stuff with the roller works out would the chevy hot cam be to big? I have read some articles where this cam, vortecsand 383 made some very large torque figures like 450 or more. What about the ZZ4 cam?Ihave seen several on ebay for sale. The rest of the setup would be RPMairgap,750dp,HEI,headers,turbo350,3.73 gears and 2 1/2"exhaust.I was planning on using the vortecs from the summit catalog on this motor not the summit brand but the GM ones with the 1.379" springs and clearanced for the 550"lift will these heads work on this motor or do you need a head that is set up for a roller cam, say like a different type of spring. On the scoggin-dickey site they have vortec heads setup for a roller cam do I need to get these or will the other ones work. I will be using 1.6 ratio roller rockers. Not really interested in a big horsepower figure I just want all the torque i can get. Sorry for going so long and thanks for your help.
