383 stroker question

i was recently searching for 383 stroker combos on the net and i read that a 9:1-9:5 383 stroker with vortec heads and compcams XE274H cam is a popular combo. Is anyone running this combo? or one similar to it? And if so, i'm curious to find out what kind of hp and torque #'s did you get with this combo??? thanks a lot!

Very few people would actually dyno a mild setup like that, and actual results can very widely. You could probably find something similar to your setup at Ryans Car Pages and go from there.

This is not exactly the same motor, but I think it would give you a fairly close comparason. The main difference is that they use a hyd roller cam instead of a hyd flat tappet. The cam that they used has the following specs (230 236 @.050 .540 .550 lift with 1.6 rockers) The xe274h would be 230 236 @ .050 .520 .520 with 1.6 rockers). The vortec heads drop off in flow after ~.500 lift, so the extra lift with the roller in this case may not have as much of an effect as usuall. Usually, in a motor like this, you an assume a ~20 hp gain with a roller over a flat tappet given the same duration at .050 but that is a really rough estimate. I think you could subtract around 20 hp from the motor below and have a rough idea of the power it would make.

Here is the 383 I was talking about. 449 hp @ 5300 RPM 483 ft lbs @ 4600 RPM.

Here is a 406 with the vortec heads and the a lunati cam almost identical to the xe274h. I think you would be looking at similar max hp (mainly due to having 1.6 rockers), but not as much low end torque. 428 hp @ 5100 rpm 535 ft lbs @3500 RPM.
