Got a 64 chevelle race car in the works. Would I be better off juicing a PG trans, or a turbo350? I have an aluminum PG that I have sucessfully run 350HP through in an Impala, what is the idea of changing the planetaries, to what would I base my choice, 1.76,1.80...standard or shorty what? This car will be raced weekends, but will cruise and be around town also.
There are a lot of things to consider for a transmission in street driven race car, (if such a thing exists). Horsepower, weight, rearend gearing? The Powerglide is a tough reliable trans but is primary used in very light, high horsepower race vehicles where the low first gear is not needed to overcome power/weight issues. There were two aluminum case Powerglides made, one with 1.76 first gear and one with 1.82 first gear. The 1.82 was primarily Used in six cylinder applications. Some of the 1.82 glides do not have oil cooler line provisions. They had holes in the bellhousing and a fan arrangement welded to the torque converter. The input shafts on the two glides are also different length. If you are set on using a Glide get the 1.76. I would think that for your application a t-350/400 or modified 700R4 would be a better application because the lower first gear would allow the weight of a full bodied car to react and get moving easier. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR PROJECT!
