388 stroker questions

Hello all,

I am in the process of building a 388 stroker for my 73 nova. Its been a VERY long time since i did any engine building and have forgotten most everything except for basics.

I was wondering what would be a real good set of heads to top off the engine with. Also not sure what cam, intake and carb would go well also. I want to build it right and am in need of some good pointers.

Thanks in advance to all!

This will all depend on what you want to achieve with the motor. Daily driver, or race motor. Pump Gas or race fuel(or E85)? Whats the rest of the combination(Transmission, rear gearing?)
Whats your budget?

It wont be a daily driver, nice cruising car with an occasional trip to the strip maybe. E85 is not out of the question. Rear gearing? Not sure i guess. Are the stock 3.08 gears adeqate? As for transmission i am still looking at options. Any ideas? Budget is somewhat limited, not a millionare so its gonna be a slow build. Maybe have it all done in a year. Thats for everything. Body is in real good shape as is the interior. So most of the funds are going into motor, trans, and replacing other minor things.

I do want to nice running car to have fun driving and some fun at the strip.

If you run a stock height type tire, an RV(torque type) camshaft(idle to 5000rpm power range), 9.5 to one compression, the 3.08's are probably fine. It really depends on how you expect it to run. Do you want to be able to use pump gas(87-93 octane). Do you expect it to achieve reasonable MPG.
Id consider at least 3.42 gears and an overdrive trans, but this will add to the overall cost.

I will be running a stock size tire. Pump gas would be best and MPG is not a real big concern. It wont be driven daily. More like a cruising car/fun at the 1/4 mile but no serious racing. Any ideas on heads and intake/carb combo's?

I just did a 383. I used AFR 195 heads, eddy RPM air gap intake, holley 750 vac sec. carb and howards hyd. roller cam .501-.509, 224-230 all at .050 if i remember the specs correctly. Im very happy with it. I don't know the exact hp-tq numbers but its in a 69 chevelle with 4 speed muncie and 3.73 gears and i makes enough power to be fun but not so radical that its a nightmare to drive on the street. So i guess it does't really mater what the numbers are as long as im happy with it.
