I am rebuilding a 389 and want to convert from standard steering to power steering. What kind of brackets etc. do I need? If you have done a conversion like this, I would appreciate your in put.

Thanks

I assume by 389 you have a Pontiac? You need to tell us the year, model, etc. For the most part you will need the power steering pump, steering box and brackets, depending on the car. Take a look at ZOOPS for tons or bracket options.

I have a 1964 GTO that I am doing a frame off restoration on. i live in Canada and we haven't got pontia motors here. Our Pontiacs came with Chev motors. I'm putting a 1965 389 four barrell back in it and want to change the standard steering to power steering. I have the pump etc. but it's the bracketry that has me puzzled. What year and make of brackets do I use - I have lots of different ones. Also, where can I buy these brackets? If someone has already done this - why reinvent the wheel.

Thanks

Brackets for the 64 GTO are one year only. The 65 is just a tad different.
I put PS on my 64 (in my Pic)
I got my brackets off of E bay and it pays to look at them well before buying. Some guys who sell them , may not know if they are listing them correctly...year model etc...
there is one right now on E bay , not saying you should buy it, just saying so you can use it for reference.
The seller is lilgto447 ad he is a very reputable seller. I bought my 64 PS brackets from him as well. So I can vouch for him.
Just go to E bay and type in -1964 pontiac power steering-
It will bring up a lot of results that you can use as a reference, or buy if you wish . I like pictures, it helps a lot.
One thing I want to mention, I had to change the rag joint also, the standard box has a smaller input shaft than the box I got for mine, so keep that in mind. LA
Oh the pittman arm is different from a standard box, but the pittman arm for the PS box will fit at the drag link end of your existing setup.

I don't know how important originality is to you, but if it's not high on your list of priorities you can use a complete late '69-up 11 bolt water pump set up including the timing chain cover, bracketry, pulleys, etc. to convert it to the later style set-up. Best to find a donor vehicle (craigslist, etc.) that all the parts can be salvaged from so a match is assured.

You can also use the larger diameter damper that was part of the 11 bolt w/p set-up.
