392 HEMI into a 37 Ford Coupe?
Hey guys,
My dads been working on installing a 392 hemi into his 37 Ford coupe and we were wondering if anyone has done this? He also wants to run a 700r tranny with overdrive...just looking for some advice or maybe some pictures of one installed. What needs to be done as far as firewall or x-member mods? thanks alot! |

Hemi in a 37 coupe
This has probably been done more than the history books will ever tell.
Check with Speedway Motors in Lincoln Nebraska, They handle a lof of stuff for those kinds of swaps. There shoudnt be a problem with the firewall. or crossmembers since the car has a straight axle front end. As for mating a GM tranny to the Hemi, thats another question. Im not up to speed on where you might find an adaptor plate for that. You would probably be better off running a Torqueflite tranny, and with that engine, as torquey as it is, you can run a tall rear end, say a 3.00 gear or there abouts. http://speedwaymotors.com/ You might also grab an issue or two of car magazines dealing with older hot rods, and look through the commercial ads. |

Not a problem. You can put an early hemi anywhere you can put a small block Chevy with headers. Weight is comparable to a big block Chevy so that's not a real problem either. When it comes to mating a GM automatic to the hemi you have several choices. HotHeads Research and Racing has a variety of adapters as does Wilcap and TR Waters.

Had a friend several years ago that bought a '40 Ford w/ 392 & 727 already installed. Fit really nice. '37 & '40 have very similar engine compartments. I concur, Speedway Motors is the best source for the bits and pieces needed in this conversion.

Hemis are pretty easy to cool so a 3" repro radiator that fits the Ford & stock hemi pump and fan would do great. That is what my buddy had in his. Just be sure to keep all the anti-recirculation sheet metal in place.
Of course you can get fancy with the BBC water pump adapters, electric fans (puller w/ shroud), aluminum front covers, etc. Last edited by willys36@aol.com : 01-05-2005 at 10:07 AM. |

I'm about half way between stock and the BBC pump. The front cover I have (pre-55 Hemi) uses a SBC pump. Also went with an aluminum radiator and home made shroud with a 16" fixed pitch fan.

re: 392 HEMI into a 37 Ford Coupe?
I have not put a Hemi into any of the 35-40 Ford cars, but have put several SBC with Th 350, 300 and 700R4. Yes you will have to cut the firewall and yes you will have to modify the X member. The reason I say this is the radiator can not be move forward in the grill shell so ever thing must move back from that point when going to any of the OHV V8. Since you will require an adapter plate to mate the 700R4 to the 392, the the bigger and longer tranny oil pan will be centered right in the middle of the X. To do this right, you should cut out the middle of the X and rebuild it wide enough to be able to drop the tranny out the bottom of the car.
Centerline, I did not know you were that talented. Good looking engine compartment. Have you added the plug wires yet? Tees |
