396 big block and 427 tall deck balance

We have a 427 tall deck big block out of a 5 ton in our 6 pack and we used the flywheel off the 396 on the 427 and it has a wicked vibration, im wondering its due to a balance

are they of a difference balance?

366, 396, 402 & 427`s were all internal balanced engines so the flywheels and dampners should all interchange... However the factory 454`s & 502`s were external balanced (different flywheels & dampners)... Be sure you did not put a 454 balancer on it at some point...? Also the flywheel for a 454 has a weight that is visible for sure and the 454 balancer has a weight inside the outer ring which is kinda hard to see unless off the engine...

Tall deck blocks use a piston that is approx.400 taller with an extra ring land that is usually in an iron band cast into piston. Resulting in an EXTREMELY heavy piston. If your six pack has aftermkt hi-perf pistons/rods. in it. And hasn't been re-balanced. The motor will shake. Due to the large reciprocating weight difference

well the 427 was in a 5 ton that had "been rebuilt" and so after that truck was a right off we put that motor in our 6 pack chevy because the 396 in there was tired and we used the 396 flywheel but for some reason it just vibrates like a mad man so we took a balancer off of a 366 put a new speedy sleeve in and now its even worse. but the 366 balancer was alot smaller

Those STOCK tall deck motors are only good for about 3500 rpm. Does this thing shake all the time? Or just higher rpm? You can't expect that six lb. piston to move too fast.

Second thought. Are you sure that thing is a tall deck? Sounds like you have a 454 and are trying to use the wrong components on it. What did you use for an intake and did you need spacers? Most all tall decks have two thermostats and a governed carb or injection system.

What year was this 'tall deck'?

No..you need the proper 396-427 balancer if it is a 427......Like Bob said, that engine is a slug unless it is rebuilt with the proper parts (pistsons etc)....You are better off doing over your 396 IMO

No! Not unless its a 454 crank inside the engine. As others have said, a 396/427 crank is neutral balanced and does not require an external balancer or flywheel/flexplate. Also, a 366/427 truck type crank will not interchange with a 396/402/427 rotating assembly and vice versa without having to be rebalanced. Interchanging them can also result in the same issues you are experiencing. Since the builder obviously put the wrong balancer on the engine, you need to find out what else he did wrong before you go too far.
