3970044 block ID number

Hi, first time on site. My son is trying to identify his engine he bought to rebuild. I have read many postings on the net with the same problem we have. The block casting number (drivers rear at back of block) is 3970044. No one seems to think this correct, but that is what it is. We do not know what the engine came out of. The number on the passenger side of engine on the pad are 14L192810 then 10219CMA. I believe it is a 350. Can anyone help with the engine/block info?
Thanks

More than likely, your block is a 3970014. However it could be any of these two:
3970014 350 68-79 200-255 car & Truck 2 & 4-Bolt

3970024 307 69-73 115-200 car & Truck 2-bolt
To check and make sure it`s not a 307 measure the bore diameter. If it`s a 307 the bore size will be less than 4 inches. If it`s a 350 the bore size will be 4 inches.

CMA 72 307 Pontiac 130 L-14 TH 350 2-Brl A.I.R., Ventura II
CMA 72 307 Nova 130 L-14 TH 350 2-Brl A.I.R.
CMA 72 307 Chevelle 130 L-14 TH 350 2-Brl A.I.R.
CMA 72 307 Camaro 130 L-14 TH 350 2-Brl A.I.R.
CMA 74 350 Nova 145 L-65 TH 350 2-Brl
CMA 74 350 Impala 145 L-65 TH 350 2-Brl
CMA 74 350 Chevelle 145 L-65 TH 350 2-Brl
CMA 74 350 Camaro 145 L-65 TH 350 2-Brl
CMA 78 350 Chevelle 170 LM-1 TH 350 4-Brl
CMA 91 350 Impala 185 L-05 700R TBI

As said, measure the bores. Also check the date code on the rear of the block. If it indeed says 44 it`s simply a miscast at the foundry when the block was poured.

The 044 block was a short run casting (low volume) thru the Tonawanda engine plant and was not to well documented. The VIN sez 1974 Los Angeles car. CMA was used in Camaro, Chevelle, Impala and Nova in 1974. Out of these, only Novas were were being assembled at LA in 1974.
