3spd trans. for 72 chevelle ss

does anyone know where i could go to order an original 3spd. standard trans. for a 1972 ss chevelle. i've searched all over the internet and each website gives me something i don't need, because i need the complete working trans.. if you can help i would sure appreciate it. thank you.

I'm not a Chevy guy but I don't believe 72 SS Chevelles came with 3 speed manual transmissions. I could be wrong I suppose. The one thing I do know is that they came with the Muncie 4 speeds or TH-350's and TH-400's depending on the engine options.

As to where you might find one new, I don't have a clue. Hope your search is successful though.

The 3-speed trans behind a BBC, and I believe other high performance engines, was the Borg-Warner T-16. They are identifiable by a 9 bolt side cover. They are really difficult to find because most BBC buyers wanted a 4-speed. It took me about 3 years to track one down.

There might also have been a heavy-duty Muncie 3-speed in it.

After doing some research, just because it was an interesting question, I have found evidence that some 72 Chevelles did indeed come with a heavy duty Muncie 3 speed manual....... you learn something every day.

But they are difficult to find ... even 25 years ago ... ;)

I needed one for a 55 Chevrolet Cameo pickup project and I looked for about 2 or 3 months ... in 1980 or so.

The urban legend goes that in 1971 some Arab oil magnate ordered 10,000 white two door base model Chevelles (even a radio delete). They were to have six cylinder engines and three speed manual transmissions. They were to be delivered all at once as a surprise gift giveaway to his employees and the families of his friends. For some reason (several different stories here) they were not delivered and they were sold in North America at greatly discounted prices. I know that several were sold locally. I have a friend that owns one but he couldn't stand the six so he dropped in a 350/350 combination.

poncho62 - must be a different urban legend. Like I said I have a friend who bought one of these and still has it. Then again maybe the seller was using your urban legend and changing it to help make his car more interesting and salable.
